Singapore-US Team creates a microchip 200x better

Ok, I'm quite a geek and such news excite me and intrigue my interests... All the geeks in the house, make some noise!... haha...

Yes, indeed Singapore and US team of engineers have successfully researched a chip that performs 7 times faster and consumes 30 times less energy, the world's most efficient microchip. (Source: http://www.todayonline.com)

According to the article... and based on theoretical calculations, the microchip can be so efficient that you can go without charging your handphone for 2 weeks, and also a pacemaker that requires no charging... I would also imagine using a laptop non stop for 24hrs or more without charging... Wow, how much convenience would that be! And if you ask me, that is perhaps the discovery that is leaps and bounds in the consumer electric industry, possibly the best discovery in our time in area of such technologies... It's application is defintely not just limited to these as described above, but also imagine greater mobility and reduction in the required power to sustain and run the device, meaning ultra portable cameras can go even smaller with the smaller battery pack and lasts longer, mobile phones can go slimmer, Macbook Air can almost vanish into air with its possible reduction in battery requirements.

The opportunities for its use are endless and the potential it can go is also limitless, when this is just the initial stages of this discovery, imagine with a more in depth and collaborated research and development into this technology, fine tuning and optimizing the technology to bring it to greater performance in terms of efficiency, "When knowledge ends, imagination begins..."

Poseidon & the Rogue Wave

For those who have watched Poseidon either in the cinema, or on national TV last night, just a little geography tip for those who are interested in what caused the sinking of Poseidon, the Rogue Wave (or otherwise know as freak waves, monster waves etc...) Anyways, Poseidon, unlike Titanic is a fiction novel written by Paul Gallico in 1969...

Rogues waves are not Tsunamis which are caused by a mass displacement of water by either a underwater volcanic eruption, a landslide, an earthquake, a meteor... But rather it is caused by a sudden shift in prevailing conditions that produces an unexpectedly huge wave. Used to be thought of as an Ocean Legend due to the inability of ocean physics to prove such a phenomenon as waves of up to 30metres high can be found in a seemingly calm deep sea condition, but recent studies and monitoring have shown that rogues waves are indeed present and real. These waves when they appear, usually leave seamen too little time to even react to it, with efforts to be futile against such enormous waves which collide with the ships and crashes down with huge amount of sea water, exerting a pressure impact that is beyond the usual operating limits of a ship even in a heavy storm out at sea. This Rogue Wave is usually accompanied by a deep trough that follows after the wave which does not help the situation. This impact usually causes a very fast sinking to the ship if it was in the direct impact region of the wave.

However, fortunately, it is a very rare phenomenon, and despite it's destructive nature, incidents of ships, cruisers, liners being sank by Rogue Waves are almost non existent. However, it remains to be a phenomenon of great interest by mariners and scientists across the globe. And perhaps, a nightmare lingering the dreams of the seamen who have seen it first hand, and a fear to those who frequently expose themselves to the rough conditions of the deep sea oceans.

Hope this little post would help you understand a little more about this amazing ocean phenomenon called the Rogue Wave... :)

I will be still and know you are God"

The Last Day....

No, it's not The Day The Earth Stood Still (some say the day the earth took my money), and it's not the End of the World by some false prophet... But it's simply the last day of the Lunar Chinese New Year! The 15th day of the Chinese New Year which brings our collection of Red Packets, lou hei, and 'partially legalised gambling' to an end... Aw....

Indeed, the CNY is a time which never fails to bring lots of joy, peace and laughter to most people. Why do I use the word most, because I've known of people who dread CNY, some of these who do not seem to be able to share the joy with anyone, thus it becomes a dreadfully lonely time during festive seasons... Doesn't it trickle a faint feeling of compassion in our hearts to hear that there are indeed such people around who are not as fortunate as us, to be able to see, touch, smell, love our close relatives and friends... Some rejected by the society, some discriminated because of their birth, and some simply deserted by their families and friends for all kinds of reasons... Sorry for the melancholic post, but it just feels at this time that we also must be truly thankful for our blessings of friends, family, love and affection... And for our material possessions which gives us much comfort, that I can be well blogging here at the comfort of the aircon and computer connected to a high speed broadband internet...

Actually I dunno what triggered me to say what I've just said, coz when i started out with the thread, I simply wanted to wish everyone a last Happy Chinese New Year for the year!... :)

*NO FRILLS HDB*

(For those that aren't from Singapore, which is apparently where i reside, HDB is the Housing Development Board, and when we say HDB in this case, it refers to the flats they offer for residents of Singapore which is at a subsidised rate compared to private developers, for more info, go to www.hdb.gov.sg) Source: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/

Ooo... some MPs suggested the No Frills HDB... there was no frills bread, no frills paper towels, no frills milk, no frills can food, no frills detergent..... And now, no frills HDB.... Well, simply put, a HDB which is without fancy sheltered walkways, without playgrounds and just simple designs, but all this at a lower and attractive price of possibly below $100K, which seems to be attracting younger couples who have just started out work.

Perhaps something like that? No, I'm just kidding... there has been discussion whether this is viable or not, in various discussion forums and blogs, however I noticed that there are a few interesting discussion points that came about... and some facts that I didn't know I didn't know....

1) In the 1970s, houses cost around $15,000-$20,000 where the starting pays were in the range of $1,000... seems really puny for our time, but at 1970s, it's actually quite decent, considering the rate of inflation over the years... especially in 2007 of 7%. And now, the starting pay is only about 2-5 times that of the past, but houses are 10-30 times MORE!.. Seems like the rate of pay increase isn't quite directly proportional to the rate of the rise in standard of living.... And it also seems like it's not the best thing to stay just employed when people actually set a price tag on your worth... Times are changing, the environment is different, but many mindsets remain in that of the past, including my own... Perhaps it is time to think twice, thrice...

2) It seems like some MPs do argue that these houses wouldn't attract younger couples because they have grown much more demanding in their quality of life, and it seems like one of those, "Younger ones these days are leading a good life"... Considering the factors of the environment and our own capabilities, I do think that many people would still be rational enough to take the pragmatic decision in deciding one of their greatest monetary asset in their life (where most people spend their entire CPF paying off for a lifetime), especially with the rising cost of living, it doesn't pay off to commit to something that is beyond our present state of earning power. I have a simple philosophy, "live within your means, and you live for a long and good time, live beyond them, and you live only to regret after a short lived good time..."

I know that many would not already agree with me that this is a good idea because it seems like the quality of the houses should not be compromised just to bring down the prices of the houses but rather streamline the production of these houses, and perhaps squeezing everyone in the supply chain dry? I think no doubt that seems like an ideal solution for some, it seems pretty much a loser mentality of "Ai Pi Ai Qi" meaning want cheap want good. There is always a tradeoff when it comes to the cost and quality of product, not withstanding the fact that more expensive things doesn't necessary mean they are good or better, but it becomes idealistic to expect premium products at no-frills pricing. The mentality we should work towards is to be fair and just in the process of any trade. We cannot expect to buy Gold bars from people for dirt cheap prices and expect to sell our tin ore for diamond prices... It all has to respect the economics of demand and supply, and thus setting our expectations right and staying within our limits and capabilities when it comes to making purchasing decisions would be most viable, instead of being discontented about everybody else who seems to be cheating of our money through their seemingly expensive prices, when all they are doing is too earning a living to feed their families back at home. Having said that, I do not deny the fact that some people do cross the line of social and business integrity and so prudence is equally important in making purchases, to prevent paying a premium that does not translate to any significant benefit.

Thus, I am actually quite for the idea, though a better name could be thought of for branding purposes of these 'back to basics' flats instead of No-Frills... And I must say that Singapore MPs really do spend quite a bit of brain cells on improving and growing Singapore in various aspects, and also bootstrapping and a moderated welfare during the tougher times... Plus the recently implemented plan of lease-buyback scheme of HDBs where home owners can sell back the remaining lease of their HDB homes to the board, for an exchange of $5,000 cash and a life annuity with a lifetime payout... If you think about it, it could potentially benefit many people especially the elderly who do not need their houses for another 60,70 years but at the same time running low on cash, most of the time due to medical costs and depleting savings...
3 cheers for the Singapore Government... *Hip hip hurray*... x3, haha...

Hello Blog World!

Hello Blog World, Aloha...! 你好, Annyohasayo, Sawadika, Ohayo gozaimasu!

I know the first post a.k.a. "Hello World" is kinda lame... But also something really memorable... As you can see, I'm a software engineer, and for those who have done programming, it's the first thrill you have when you have successfully programmed a "Hello World!" in any sample application... I really wonder who came up with this term... Doesn't sound very intuitive, but nonetheless simple and straight forwardly memorable...

Why am I so excited to greet the Blogger's world...? Because, though I am a software engineer, which also means I face the computer a longer period of time everyday than I face my mother girlfriend and pet dog... or maybe the mirror? (for those who have extreme vanity habits... not me...), I have never really started on a blog before... I've got facebook, friendster, hi5, and ya... many many more social network accounts, but never really got down to writing a blog...

And I took a while to decide on the theme of this blog... So from the title already, you can tell that it is a very informed decision...... and a severe evidence of indecision... haha!!!.... wad's a theme about anything under the sun? Generalistically specializing?. hahaha...... But really I decided that I would like this blog to be something that people can see and talk and discuss about anything really, anything under the sun... Yes, the thing u see underneath...the sun... :)

So till the next time I decide there's something under the sun to share, I would... Actually I have lotsa things in mind already.... Just saving my creative juices for later... :p

Alrighty, to all who have seen this, Hello to you, and thanks for reading...
Till we meet again!
